Dennis Ahlburg, professor of human resources and industrial relations in the Industrial Relations Center at the Carlson School of Management, was named the Fesler-Lampert Chair in Urban and Regional Affairs for 2001–2002.

At the time of his appointment, Ahlburg was engaged in a project investigating why employees leave companies, research that is particularly crucial to Minnesota, where turnover among employees exceeds the national average. Ahlburg used the resources provided by his appointment to carry out the empirical work at the heart of the study: surveying a selected group of employees every four months over the course of several years to track their employment behavior and determine the factors that underlie them. He also used the resources to begin work on two extensions of the study: an analysis of employee turnover in the long-term-care industry in Minnesota, and a project on recruitment and retention of childcare workers in the state for the Department of Children, Families, and Learning.
