Advanced Search Help

The advanced search allows you to perform more refined searches. If a basic search returns too many items, or does not appear to locate a particular item you are looking for, an advanced search is recommended. The following sections explain the various search options available on the advanced search page.

Search Terms

Advanced search will search for up to three (3) search terms that you specify. If you enter more than one term in a search term box, advanced search will only search for the first term you entered in that box.

The search engine is not case sensitive, and extra spaces and punctuation (including hyphens) are ignored. This means that if you wish to search for a hyphenated term—for example, "Greco-Roman"—you must enter "Greco" and "Roman" as separate terms. Otherwise, the search engine will search for "GrecoRoman."

The search engine uses boolean logic to govern how search terms are combined. You can choose how the search engine combines the terms you enter by using one of the connectors below to connect each term. Each of these connectors produces a different kind of search:

  • AND: Finds documents that contain all of the specified words. Minnesota AND Twins finds documents with both the word Minnesota and the word Twins.

  • OR: Finds documents that contain at least one of the specified words. Minnesota OR Twins finds documents containing either the word Minnesota or the word Twins. The found documents could contain both items, but not necessarily.

  • WITH: Finds documents that contain the specified words directly adjacent to one another. Twin WITH Cities would find all documents containing the phrase Twin Cities, but would not find Minnesota Cities--Minneapolis—Twins Baseball.

  • NEAR: Finds documents that contain both of the specified words within 10 words of each other. Minnesota NEAR Twins would find documents containing Minnesota Twins, but probably not any other kind of twins.

  • NOT: Finds documents that contain the first word but not the second word. Twin NOT Cities would find all documents that contain the word Twin but do not contain the word Cities.

The default setting for basic and advanced searches is to connect search terms with AND.

Limiting Your Search to Specific Fields

The default for basic and advanced searches is to search the author, title, keywords, and abstract fields for the search terms you enter. In some instances, you may wish to limit your search to only some or one of these fields.

  • Author: All publications indexed in the catalog contain an entry in the author field. Authors may be an organization ("Center for Urban and Regional Affairs"), an individual ("Tom Scott"), or several individuals.

  • Title: All publications indexed in the catalog contain an entry in the title field.

  • Keywords: All publications indexed in the catalog have been assigned keywords based on the primary focus of the publication. Keywords are subjective, so if a particular keyword (elderly, for example) yields no results, try another search using a related term (such as aged or aging). You can view a list of keywords used to index publications in this catalog.

  • Abstract: Approximately one-third of the publications indexed in the catalog include an abstract or summary as part of their record.

Limiting Your Search by Publication Type

The catalog indexes four types of publications, listed below. Only the first two types are official CURA publications that have undergone a review and editing process by CURA. The last two types are unofficial publications that report on projects CURA supported, but that have not been reviewed by CURA.

  • CURA Reporter Article: A feature-length article from our quarterly publication, the CURA Reporter; reviewed and edited by CURA.

  • Published CURA Report: An official CURA report about a CURA-supported project; reviewed and edited by CURA.

  • Unpublished Project Report: An unpublished report about a CURA-supported project, often written by a student research assistant; not reviewed or edited by CURA.

  • Report Published Elsewhere: A report about a CURA-supported project written or published by an agency other than CURA; not reviewed or edited by CURA.

Limiting Your Search by Date Range

The catalog includes publications produced since CURA was first formed in 1968. Because many of the materials indexed are time-sensitive, you have the option of limiting your search by date to the last 2 years, the last 5 years, or the last 10 years. The default setting for basic and advanced searches is to search for all publications regardless of publication date.

Limiting Your Search by Availability

More than 2000 publications are indexed in this catalog. The availability of these publications varies.

  • Hardcopy: Indicates the publication is in print, and an original hardcopy is available. Hardcopies may be ordered online using the shopping cart feature. CURA will provide one hardcopy of up to five (5) individual reports free of charge.

  • Photocopy: Indicates the publication is no longer in print, but a photocopy is available. Photocopies may be ordered online using the shopping cart feature. CURA will photocopy up to 200 pages per order at no charge.

  • Online: Indicates the publication is available online as either an HTML document (plain text), or as a PDF file (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0). Online publications can be accessed by clicking on the highlighted URL contained in the catalog record for that item.

  • Reference Only: Indicates the publication is available only for use in the CURA resource collection (room 330, HHH Center). These publications include maps, videotapes, etc. Please call (612) 626-1551 to make prior arrangements with our staff to use the resource collection.
