Search CURA Publications Catalog

The CURA publications library is currently being digitized by the University of Minnesota Digital Conservancy. When the project is complete, the entire CURA publications library will be online and fully searchable. Unfortunately, during this process we are not able to honor individual requests for publications . Additionally, we no longer have physical copies of publications to send out.

New publications are digitized daily and the publications catalog on the CURA website is not automatically updated with links to scanned copies, so please search the CURA collection at the Digital Conservancy for the publications you are looking for:

Search for reports, monographs, CURA Reporter articles, and other publications stemming from CURA-supported projects.

  • For search terms entered in the Search full text box, only publications matching all terms will be found. Use fewer terms to broaden your search, or more terms to narrow it.
  • The optional Program and Keywords fields can help further refine your search.

Feasibility Study for the Creation of a Latino Credit Union in Minnesota. 2006 Diaz, Jose.

Linguistic barriers, identification requirements, and cultural bias against formal banking institutions are all factors that reduce immigrant access to credit and other traditional banking services. Compared to others, Latinos are more likely to be without any connection to the formal banking sector and are 62% less likely to have any retirement savings. Throughout the United States, Latino community members have taken matters into their own hands and established fully bilingual credit unions.

Economic Indicators of the Lake Street Corridor. 2010 Diaz, Jose.

The Lake Street corridor is 5-miles stretching west to east from Lake Calhoun to the Mississippi River 30 blocks south of the center of downtown Minneapolis. During the period between 2005 and 2008, three quarters of the street has been under reconstruction. This project and report had two primary goals: First, to present a summary of the changes in two major economic indicators between 2004 and 2006 for the Lake Street Corridor, the number of businesses and the level of sales tax. Second, to identify the impact being in a construction zone may have had on these indicators.

Understanding Strategies and Tactics in Commercial Corridor Revitalization. 2012 Dyste, Diana Catherine Dyste.

Selby Avenue was developed in the late 19th century as a bustling commercial route extending west from downtown St. Paul. Its development was in conjunction with the expansion of transportation routes, which both facilitated, and was facilitated by, population growth and suburbanization. At one point, Dale Street was the western most point of development along the avenue, but over time, the commercial route extended past Dale, serving the neighborhoods’ needs both commercially and residentially.

Connecting the Community Report Edwards, Brittany

This summer, we were able to gather community input and ideas on increasing bike and walkability on North-South routes along the Lake Street corridor, where future transit stations are most likely to be placed. This memo will focus on the engagement methods chosen and the most relevant feedback from each, along with some new ideas to improve these connections. Through an online survey and a series of focus groups, we were able to obtain a set of macro and micro data of community identified issues and potential solutions.

Preserving Homeownership in North Minneapolis: Responding to the Impact of Foreclosures. 2008 Erickson, Alyssa

Imagine what the public reaction would be if a tsunami destroyed over 2,000 homes in one area, leaving 2,000 families without shelter or assets. North Minneapolis is now experiencing such a tidal wave of foreclosures, and while the houses may still be standing, the devastation families experience through foreclosure is on the scale of that experienced in a massive natural disaster. Northside neighborhoods and residents are concerned about the negative impacts on individuals, families and communities.

Farmers Market Model Research. 2010 Eschenbacher, Heidi.

Many farmers' markets rely heavily on volunteers. This is and will continue to be no exception for the Kingfield Farmers' Market as it moves from a neighborhood organization supported event to a volunteer run operation. The Kingfield Farmers Market committee is working through it's organizational structure, such as finding a fiscal agent and becoming a non-profit organization. This report does not cover the details of becoming a non-profit organization. It will, however, describe considerations for a volunteer managed farmers' market and other markets that have had volunteer beginnings.

Minneapolis Community Gardens: A Study of Public Policies in Minneapolis and Hennepin County. 2008 Foster West, Erin

The Twin Cities Metro Area has a large number of community gardens but no comprehensive city policy regarding community gardening. As vacant or tax-forfeit land is increasingly unavailable, land has become difficult to acquire for establishing a community garden. Gardeners need to increasingly look toward public land to provide the space needed for community gardens. Public agencies also have the capability to provide much needed services such as water and compost and other services that cities and counties can offer community gardens.

Afro Eco exists to organize a new relationship between Pan African people and the land they inhabit. Food sovereignty in North Minneapolis is a more important issue now than ever. Struggles for food security matched with the overwhelming underutilization of land have led to the need for a study that informs organizers how to move forward in accessing the land for local food production.
