Search Terms
The search engine uses boolean logic to govern how search terms are combined. You may enter up to four (4) search terms (including partial words) separated by the following connectors: AND, OR, WITH, or NOT. Each connector produces a different kind of search:
-
AND: Finds documents that contain all of the specified words. Minnesota AND Twins finds documents with both the word Minnesota and the word Twins.
-
OR: Finds documents that contain at least one of the specified words. Minnesota OR Twins finds documents containing either the word Minnesota or the word Twins. The found documents could contain both items, but not necessarily.
- WITH: Finds documents that contain the specified words directly adjacent to one another. Twin WITH Cities would find all documents containing the phrase Twin Cities, but would not find those containing Cities 97 coverage of Minnesota Twins baseball.
The default setting for advanced searches is to connect search terms with AND.
Limiting Your Search to Organizations That Serve Specific Groups
Each organization listed in the database has been placed in one of the following five categories based on the organization's primary affiliation:
- African/African American
- American Indian
- Asian/Asian American
- Latino
- Multicultural
The default setting is to search for all organizations. In some instances, you may wish to limit your search to only organizations that serve particular cultural communities.
Limiting Your Search by Major Activity Area Each organization listed in the database is categorized by main activity. The main activity categories were originally developed by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits to distinguish the many different activities of nonprofit organizations throughout the country.
In categorizing organizations, we used the primary purpose (main activity) of each organizationregardless of what else the organization might do.
You can view a list of the main activity categories, which includes an explanation of each category.
Limiting
Your Search to Records Recently Added or Updated The database
includes all organizations listed
in the print version of the Directory (5th edition), as well as additions, deletions,
and updates since the print version was published in January 2005.
You can search for only
those listings that have been added or changed since the print version
was published.
Our main source of updated information for organizations listed in the directory database comes from organizations themselves. If you know of an organization that should be listed but is not, please
