The Nutritional Quality of Foods Donated by Individuals to the Emergency Foodshelf Network.

Millions of Americans experience food insecurity and rely on food assistance programs, such as food pantries, to meet their needs. This study examined the nutritional quality of food donated by individuals to the Emergency Foodshelf Network (EFN), a major food bank in Minneapolis. The USDA Health Eating Index 2005 was used to score the nutritional quality of foods compared to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The study found EFN scored 67.0, which is well above the average (mean) score of 57.2 for the diet of American adults. Results from this study suggest that adopting a nutrition policy for donated foods at food shelves and food banks could improve the nutritional quality of available foods.
