Linking Neighborhoods with Academic Classrooms.

In 1996-97 NPCR began a new program, University-Neighborhood Network (UNN), which links neighborhood projects with academic classrooms. The idea behind the program is that academic classes that include a student research component and are relevant to urban neighborhoods could aid both neighborhoods and academic goals if they were given real neighborhood projects for the students to work on. The idea has proved to be popular. By early 1998, thirty-two projects had been completed for twenty-two Twin Cities neighborhoods. One project gathered information on how welfare reform will affect the children of the Summit-University neighborhood in St. Paul. Another found students exploring different racial and ethnic groups in the Powderhorn Park and Phillips neighborhoods of Minneapolis. Students appreciate the real world learning experience, faculty see the quality of learning being enhanced, and neighborhoods appreciate the help that lets them get projects done that they otherwise couldn't tackle.
