Sustaining Affordable Housing in the Central Corridor: The Neighborhood Connection

The District Councils Collaborative of Saint Paul and Minneapolis (DCC) ensures that the needs and interests of neighborhoods along the proposed Central Corridor Light-Rail Transit line are given full consideration. Recent research reports demonstrate how access to reliable and frequent public transit dramatically increases the affordability of neighborhoods and decreases the percentage of household income used for transportation costs. However, the same reports also acknowledge that preserving and providing affordable housing in transitways is challenging. Gregory Pates, a Landscape Architecture graduate student in the College of Design, identified strategies to ensure a mix of housing options along the central corridor. The results are being used engage DCC member organizations and others in discussion about affordable housing and to propose actions neighborhoods might take to preserve it.
