Revitalization of Smith Avenue Transit Corridor

The Neighborhood Development Alliance (NeDA) is a nonprofit Community Development Corporation working primarily on the West Side of St. Paul. The Smith Avenue corridor will be going through a planning process that will result in a Small Area Plan (that will be included in St. Paul’s Comprehensive Plan) and a resident/business authored work plan that St. Paul and West St. Paul can use to promote and support revitalization efforts. To inform this planning a report on the last 50 years of the areas history is required. Rebecca Harnik, an undergraduate student in Geography at Macalester College, conducted an historic review of demographics including businesses and housing composition, population data and historic traffic patterns. The results are being used to provide information that is helping community members, public officials and city staff think logically and creatively in envisioning Smith Avenue’s next 50 years.
