Environmental Policies and Resources Review for Pine Island

The City of Pine Island is situated 10 minutes north of Rochester and 35 minutes south of the Twin Cities on Highway 52. In response to a proposed large-scale development, community members and the Pine Island Economic Development Authority formed an Environmental Policy Steering Committee (EPSC) to identify and propose to the city council and planning and zoning commission specific environmental policies to guide future development. A graduate student in landscape architecture and urban planning reviewed and documented environmental policies in other cities of a similar size and growth rate, and gathered information on a variety of sustainability issues, including energy use, renewable energy systems, green buildings, water quality, and water usage. The resulting report informed creation of the environmental and sustainability policies and goals the EPSC recommended to the planning and zoning commission and city council. The community secured additional funds from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation to support implementation efforts.
