Bedlam in Seward: Youth Theater Now

The Seward Neighborhood Group (SNG) was established in 1960 to make Seward a better place to live, work, and play and is recognized by the City of Minneapolis as the official citizen participation organization within the boundaries of the Seward neighborhood. Bedlam Theatre’s mission is to produce radical works of theatre with a focus on collaboration and a unique blend of community and professional art. The Unit Collective is an independent collective of emerging playwrights of color and theater artists connected to the Playwrights’ Center devoted to pushing the development of new work beyond the conventional parameters of play development, such as sit-down readings and workshops. The mission of CommonBond Communities is to build community by creating affordable housing as a stepping-stone to success. This project used theater to engage East African youth in Seward to explore issues of adapting to a new culture. Through seeing a Bedlam Theatre show, theater workshops with professional artists, and performing their own work, youth participants gained new skills and educated their own community about the experience.
