The federal Moving to Opportunity Demonstration offered families from distressed public housing in five cities vouchers to help them move to low poverty communities. The hope was that living in better neighborhoods with more resources would help these families improve their life chances. Drawing on the recent book, Moving to Opportunity: The Story of an American Experiment to End Ghetto Poverty, this talk will examine how this experiment affected the lives of the children who experienced it. In particular, it will focus on how neighborhood environments led to different outcomes for girls and boys.
