Membership in MNIS provides an opportunity to be part of a nationally recognized and awarded research project focusing on capacity building, collaborations and data sharing. MNIS is an established organization that is results oriented and seeks to become a tool for furthering the goals of community based revitalization organizations.

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP

  • Ability to create visual representations of community issues (maps) and present information in an easy to understand format.
  • Access to data and GIS tools for program evaluation, planning and development activities
  • Training in the use of data, GIS software, analysis, and map production for use in reports, plan evaluations, and meeting presentations
  • GIS Project and technical assistance through staff or students
  • Access to color printer and large-format plotter for creating poster-size maps
  • Opportunities to participate in conferences, workshops, and professional trainings
  • Opportunities to learn from peer organizations engaged in GIS use for community revitalization

 MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Board must annually pass a resolution re-authorizing participation in MNIS, which includes the following:

  • Board and Staff have read and agreed to abide by Acceptable Use Policy
  • Authorize a representative and alternate to represent the organization on the MNIS the Steering Committee who will report back to Board on MNIS activities
  • Shall agree to contribute toward the costs of MNIS ($300/yr.)
  • Active participation at Steering Committee Meetings.
  • Members shall file quarterly use report with MNIS coordinator

EXPECTATIONS OF PARTICIPATING COMMUNITIES

Active participation in capacity building efforts, which include:

  • Becoming proficient in GIS software and data manipulation
  • Developing GIS projects for community use
  • Occasional attendance at city meetings, conferences and expositions to present, discuss, and/or display community GIS projects
Participants will incorporate GIS applications throughout their organizations work activities where applicable.
