Programs at CURA

CURA currently supports more than a dozen programs that sponsor research projects related to urban and regional affairs in Minnesota. Each program has a specific focus, as well as its own application procedures and deadlines. CURA Community-Based Research Programs—CURA houses three programs that provide graduate or undergraduate student assistance for applied research projects, program planning and development, program evaluation, and other short-term projects (view application form):

 
Center for Community and Regional Research (CCRR)—Supports cooperative research involving community agencies in northeastern Minnesota and University of Minnesota at Duluth faculty and students. Contact: Larry Knopp, CCRR director, lknopp@d.umn.edu, 218-726-6246

Community Development Work Study Program—Provides fellowship and internship opportunities for disadvantaged or underrepresented students at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs who have a career interest in housing and community development issues. Faculty Interactive Research Program (FIRP)—Competitive program that supports interactive public policy research between University of Minnesota faculty and community organizations or government agencies in Minnesota. Contact: William Craig, CURA associate director, wcraig@umn.edu, 612-625-3321
Fesler-Lampert Chair in Urban and Regional Affairs—Endowed chair position that supports faculty work on projects related to urban and regional affairs in Minnesota. Contact: Thomas Scott, CURA director, scott001@umn.edu, 612-625-7340
Hennepin–University Partnership—An initiative to make the connection between the state’s premier research institution and largest county more strategic, including collaboration on important community-based research, sharing of academic and practitioner expertise, and providing students with field experience. Minneapolis Neighborhood Information System (MNIS)—Provides capacity-building and technical assistance for neighborhood organizations using maps, geographic information systems (GIS) analysis, and City of Minneapolis parcel-level data. Minnesota Center for Neighborhood Organizations (MCNO)—Provides training for organizers and staff at neighborhood and community organizations in the Twin Cities metro area and Greater Minnesota. Contact: Jay Clark, MCNO program director, clark037@umn.edu, 612-625-2513
Minnesota Center for Survey Research (MCSR)—Provides survey research and consultation services for University faculty and staff, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations working on public policy issues in Minnesota. Contact: Rossana Armson, MCSR director, armso001@umn.edu, 612-627-4282
Minnesota 3-D (M3D)—A GIS-based application that combines labor market, housing, and development information and analysis to support informed planning and community development decisions in the Twin Cities metro area. Neighborhood Partnership Initiative (NPI)—Supports innovative, effective partnerships among neighborhood organizations and youth, immigrant, or arts organizations that increase involvement of immigrant, underrepresented, and youth constituencies in solving neighborhood problems and improving the community. Northside Seed Grant (NSG)—Supports community organizations that operate programs serving residents of the Northside community by providing student research assistants and faculty researchers to carry out neighborhood-initiated and neighborhood-guided projects.
