Webmail allows you to check your email from any place on the globe. I’m glad I didn’t know about it when I was in Australia; I would have ruined my vacation. But sometimes when you are on the road, accessing e-mail is essential.
Here’s all you do:
1. Go to http://www.mail.umn.edu
2. Click GopherMail (my preference; Web Mail 3.0 is OK too)l
3. Type in your internet ID (e.g. scott001) and password. This allows you to see your incoming mail (sitting on the U’s server). You can read messages and respond. You can delete messages. You can send new messages to anyone (but you’ll need to know their email address, because you won’t have access to the address book stored on your office computer). When you return to your desk, all messages are still on the U’s server waiting for your action. That is, when you “Get Messages,” they will be downloaded to your personal computer.
