SERVES: Humphrey Institute Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) or Master of Public Policy (MPP) students with a career interest in housing and community development issues. Preference is given to economically disadvantaged or underrepresented students who intend to work in Minnesota upon graduation.
GOALS: To ensure that students from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds are able to gain the training and experience needed to join the ranks of those who will direct and implement the future development of communities in the United States.
PROGRAM: Community and economic development, like many other fields, is continually in need of dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds and a deep understanding of the problems and potential of economically distressed and socially isolated communities. The Community Development Work Study Program (CDWSP) is a national effort of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide financial support to educational institutions to recruit and support economically disadvantaged students of color committed to community development.
The program at the University of Minnesota is a partnership between CURA and the University’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, and is administered by the Humphrey Institute. Through the program, fellowships are made available to students to pursue a graduate degree in urban and regional planning or public policy. During their degree program, students also gain practical experience through an internship with a community development agency. CDWSP Fellowships cover academic costs and salary for a professional internship (10 hours per week during the first year, 40 hours per week during the summer, and 20 hours per week during the second year).
The program is jointly funded through CURA, the Humphrey Institute, HUD Community Work Study grants, and the organizations in which fellows are placed.
APPLICATIONS: Applications for the fellowship program are accepted once per year. The application deadline for the 2006–2007 academic year is March 1, 2006. For application information, visit the Humphrey Institute “Financial Aid” webpage at www.hhh.umn.edu/admissions/financial_aid.html or contact:
